ESCADA MEETS THILO WESTERMANN A collaboration with fashion designer Daniel Wingate (ESCADA)
For the Spring-Summer 2015 capsule collection ESCADA MEETS THILO WESTERMANN, Thilo Westermann collaborated with Daniel Wingate to extend his self-reflexive practice into the realm of fashion. Influenced by fashion magazines throughout his career, the artist translates elements of his reverse glass paintings onto fabrics, which are then tailored in a way that enhances the original motifs. The symmetrical stigma and column of a Vanda Miss Joaquim orchid, for example, take on the appearance of a dress’s fly front, while one of its petals transforms into a flowing skirt. The baroque opulence of peonies in a vase with a dragon relief is reimagined as a delicate evening gown with a pink train. Meanwhile, the symmetrical cut of precious crystal vessels shimmers as a faceted, all-over pattern on the suits.
By playing with and transforming such details, the capsule collection’s elegant gowns, dresses, blazers, suits, and foulards celebrate the possibilities of fashion while preserving their origins in the meticulous process of creating an image stroke by stroke.
After kick-off events in New York, Paris, Tokyo, Moscow, and Shanghai, the collection will be available in Escada stores worldwide.
